It is only into the end up so it starts to fall apart, but the slap-up finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Excellently staged and wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero high issue inside living down its extremely unattractive term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The movie actions in the an instant rate, the fresh conversation was slick and you can characterisations fundamentally energetic. Dick Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes lead this new shed expertly, since the detective was played with considerable aplomb by the see your face personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]

The fresh film’s creator and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates an effective multidimensional chess video game, for mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) did from the gambling establishment and dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language away from love and you may possibility, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly cocky photographs (as well as their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a hidden vintage of one’s style.” [ 10 ]

Photograph have action and anticipation, and you will specific brief touches regarding humor to include style. Ace performances because of the Manhood Powell, while the a gambling household overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, while the a police inspector, together with up the rating . Even though the patch uses a familiar development, the latest characterizations try fresh and shows good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog was terse and you may topical, avoiding the emotional, phoney contact. Unusual camera angles appear now and then to help you escalate attention and you can momentarily stop the attention. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling since director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, amazing copywriter and user producer, in addition to supports rendering it a mellow manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a matter of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces stylishly when you’re a big shed from stars and you may stars promote your vintage support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little lady just who brings about the new best in your and Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you can slinky vixen just who gets your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy because the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a different in a position journey given that a weary cops inspector just who in the end shuts the case. Many drinking and you will smoking is accomplished from the most of the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
