It is merely towards end it starts to break down, nevertheless smack-up finale rescues they throughout the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will wisely dialogued, it will have zero higher difficulty from inside the life down its extremely unattractive label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The movie actions within a simple pace, the new dialogue try smooth and you can characterisations basically energetic. Cock Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes lead brand new shed expertly, while the detective try enjoyed big aplomb from the that person character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody on This new Yorker indexed “Which terse and you can tight film noir are considering the brand new intimate and you can elite group conflicts of term character, the fresh unlawful mastermind (played by the Knob Powell) at the rear of a smart unlawful gambling establishment. Brand new film’s author and you can manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess games, to have mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) spent some time working during the casino and you may old good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely regulated body language away from love and you will hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will fashionably cocky pictures (as well as his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle an invisible vintage of your own category.” [ ten ]

Picture features activity and you can anticipation, and you may specific short suits of humor to incorporate taste. Expert activities of the Manhood Powell, just like the a playing family overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, as the an authorities inspector, including in the rating . As the patch pursue a common trend, the newest characterizations are new therefore the shows good enough so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you may topical, preventing the emotional, phoney touch. Strange cam bases arrive on occasion to help you intensify notice and you will briefly stop the eye. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling since the director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, amazing blogger and you can member producer, and additionally helps with making this a flaccid development.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a question of viewing Mr. Powell read their paces stylishly when you’re a massive throw off stars and actresses render your classic support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little woman just who brings forth new finest in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you can slinky vixen who becomes him with the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily as the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does a unique able trip while the a tired cops inspector just who in the end shuts the outcome. Significant amounts of ingesting and you will smoking is carried out because of the most of the worried.” [ twelve ]
